Hindustan Zinc Limited or HINDZINC 

Hindustan Zinc or HZL was incorporated from the erstwhile Metal Corporation of India on January 10, 1966, as a Public Sector Undertaking. In April 2002, SOVL or Sterlite Opportunities and Ventures Limited made an open offer for the acquisition of shares of the company. And consequent to the disinvestment of Government of India's (GOI) stake of about 26% including management control to SOVL and also acquired additional 20% of shares from the public, under the SEBI Regulations 1997. In August 2003, the SOVL acquired additional shares to the extent of 18.92% of the paid-up capital from GOI in the exercise of 'call option' clause in the agreement of shareholder’s between the GOI and SOVL. Along with the above additional acquisition, SOVL's stake in the company also gone up to 64.92%. Thus, the GOI's stake in the company now stands at 29.54%. Currently, it is India's only integrated producer of zinc and lead and also one of the world-leading integrated zinc and lead producers. The company smelters are being located at Chanderiya, Debari, and Visakhapatnam. The HZL mines are located at Zawar, Dariba and Rampura Agucha.

Some of the Business Activities:

  • The company manufacturers three qualities of zinc such as exclusive high-grade zinc (used in construction, infrastructure, and much more), the high-grade zinc, and lastly, the prime western zinc.
  • The HZL manufactures about 99.99% pure lead used in lead-acid battery, ceramic glazes, electrodes, and much more.
  • It also manufactures silver used in photographic material, conductor, jewelry, and many other purposes.
  • The mineral major produces cadmium, which has an approximate purity of about 99.95–99.99%. It is also used in Ni-Cd batteries, stabilizers, coating, and the alloys.
  • The HZL also manufactures the highly acidic sulphuric acid used in fertilizers, dyes, textiles, sugar refining, and other purposes.

Some of the Milestones:

  • Mar 31, 2010: The Company started the metal production from its Hydro–Zinc Smelter located at Dariba Smelting Complex, Dariba in Rajasthan.
  • May 06, 2010: The company exploration activities were a significant success with an approximate increase of 33.7 million tonnes to its reserves as well as resources containing 3.4 million tonnes of the zinc-lead metal, which is before depletion in FY10.
  • May 11, 2010: The Company acquires the specific zinc unit of the UK Anglo American for about $1.3 billion (INR 5,850 crore).
  • Jan 06, 2011: The Company also inks pact with the Suzlon for setting up wind projects of about 150 MW.
  • Jan 20, 2011: The Company is also set to become one of the top producers of silver across the globe. According to its estimated output of 500 tonnes by March 2011, which is more than double its production currently.

Some of the Awards:

  • The Company received the Golden Peacock award for its corporate governance.
  • It was honored with the Safety Innovation award for the implementation of innovative safety practices created by the Institution of Engineers (India).
  • Its Chanderiya captive power plant was the Asian Power Plant in 2007
  • Also, the Best Emission Reduction Project as per the Asian Power Charlton Media Group, Singapore.
  • The HZL received Four Star rating for both health and safety Performance by British Safety Council, UK.
