NHPC Limited or NHPC

The NHPC Company was incorporated on November 7, 1975, under the Companies Act as a private limited company under the name of National Hydro Electric Power Corporation Private Limited. It was soon converted to a public limited company with effect from April 2, 1986. And the promoter of the company is the President of India who acts via the MoP, and GoI and currently holds 100% of the paid–up share capital of this particular company. It is a hydroelectric power generating company that is dedicated to the planning, development, and implementation of an integrated and has an efficient network of various hydroelectric projects in India. It is responsible for executing all the aspects of the development of hydroelectric projects, from the concept to the commissioning. It has developed and constructed approximately 13 hydroelectric power stations, and its total installed capacity is about 5,175 MW. It also includes the two power stations with a combined capacity of 1,520 MW, built and operated via the Subsidiary, named NHDC. Its power stations, as well as the hydroelectric projects, are located predominantly in both the North and North East of India and the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Assam, Manipur, Sikkim, and West Bengal. The company generated approximately 14,813.16 MUs of electricity in Fiscal in the year 2008. Currently, it is engaged in the construction of around 11 additional hydroelectric projects, which are expected to increase the total installed capacity by at least 4,622 MW. And further eight projects which include one joint venture project, which has an anticipated capacity of 5,751 MW, is currently awaiting a sanction from the CCEA. The survey and investigation works are already being carried out to prepare the project proposal reports for an additional nine projects, which totals the 7,255 MW of the anticipated capacity.

The motive to establish this company was to plan, promote and organize an integrated as well as the efficient development of power in all its aspects through conventional and non–traditional sources in India and abroad which includes the planning, investigation, research, design and preparation of all the preliminary, feasible and definite project reports, with construction, generation, operation and maintenance of power stations and projects, and transmission, distribution and trading and sale of power generated at stations in accordance with the national economic policy & objectives which were laid down by the Central Government frequently and the release of the water and other needs of the State Government as per their agreed parameters.

The Milestones:

  1. 2008 – 09 –The company conferred Mini Ratna Category I status by the GoI–The company has entered into an MoU with the government of Jammu & Kashmir, and JKSPDC and PTC to incorporate a joint venture in order to develop the Pakal Dul and other hydro projects running in the Chenab River Basin–The Incorporation of joint venture company, named National Power Exchange Limited, along with the NTPC, PFC and Tata Consultancy Services Limited.
  2. 2009–10 –Incorporation of a joint venture company, named National High Power Test Laboratory Private Limited, along with the NTPC, and Powergrid Corporation of India Limited and also Damodar Valley Corporation.

  1. 2009– The TERI Corporate Environmental Award 2009–Performance Excellence Award by the reputed Indian Institution of Industrial Engineering–Gold Medal for the Outstanding Contribution in Enhancing the Image of India by the Institute of Economic Development–Amity Award for Best Corporate Social Responsibility in the year 2008.
